HISTORY STANDS STILL AT THE FLAGLER BAR!
Good Times and Great Friends Never Change
Bonnie and Lee Hibner of Flagler Bar

Some things never change.  In celebration of the Flagler Bar's 25th Anniversary, they rolled back the prices to 1982, on Saturday, October 13, 2007.  Hundreds of customers from those who had just found out about the friendly family bar to those who had been coming for 25 years celebrated with free barbeque and beer, while listening to Sonny Privette of the Astor Boys, and watching the Flagler Bar Divas (bartenders) and the owner, Lee Hibner get dunked by their customers.

Joanne King, mayor of Bunnell for 15 years, stopped by to thank the Flagler Bar for being a consistent supporter of the City of Bunnell and wished the family operated business much success in the future.  This business is one of the oldest with the same ownership for this length of time, and one that does much for the entire community.

Judy, One of The Best Bartenders in Florida

The legendary bar is noted for being a place "where everybody knows your name".  The Flagler Bar "family" consists of matriarchs, who have been coming to the bar since the beginning.  Like all families, it has an extended family of those who have been regular customers for 25 years under the current ownership and to "newly adopted" members every day.

The Flagler Bar on US 1 and Hwy 100 in Bunnell, the oldest in Flagler County, has a very diverse and interesting heritage.  The original "family tree" began with Carol Buckles in 1954, a truly unique character.  Locals like, Walton Kenny, tell you that you could tell when the bar was OPEN when Carol would put out an American Flag on the sidewalk.

Prior to the widening of Hwy 1, the Flagler Bar originally went out as far as the center lane of the Highway/State Street.  So The Flagler Bar building was cut basically in half.

Now What Are They Up To?
Security was never a problem.  When someone got out of hand, Buckles would just hit the top of the bar with a hammer.  The hammer is still at the bar, but has since been retired.  Clyde Edwards, a long standing patron, remembers running match-box race cars around the top of the bar.

"Miss Carol" believed in the "honor system", so when she wanted to go to bed in the back room, she'd just sit a bottle of whatever you were drinking in front of you, and you'd pay for what you drank when you left.

Lee Hibner of PA came down for a vacation and stopped in Bunnell to visit a friend, Dottie Flint.  Currently owning a fish market in Ocean City, MD, he was told that Carol's son, George Buckles, wanted to sell the bar.  His overnight trip turned into weeks.  Afterwards, he went home, sold his business and the rest is history.

Judy, THE BOSS at Flagler BarAlthough the "official owner" of the Flagler Bar is Lee Hibner, Judy Webb, who started out with Hibner 25 years ago is reall the "Boss".  Because of their love of Bunnell and all of the customers, it is evident when new people drop in the bar; they are automatically embraced as part of the "family environment".

The Flagler Bar holds tradition as their milestone, but they continually keep up with their customers' desires.  The Flagler Bar is the place for wedding receptions, birthday parties and other special occasions.  They have special costume parties, like the Bike n Babe Party, Prom Night, Doctors and Nurses Night and, of course, Halloween and New Year's Eve Parties.  Since most of the customers are NASCAR fans, special events are planned around the races.  Annual cruises are also enjoyed by the customers.

Even the newly updated restrooms reflect the upbeat atmosphere with signs that encourage you - Smile, Fabulous, Behave, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and Play Hard.

Regular activities include a Dart Tournament on Monday night, Pool Tournament on Tuesday, and Friday nights are special because of the beloved Julie Jones, who is immortalized in Flagler County as Karaoke with "Jammin' Jewels".  Sunday, you can stop by for Free darts and pool, free popcorn and watch the Nascar Races on a big screen TV.

Hibner and his wife, Bonnie, were surprised with over 40 friends from Astor, Fl, who came over to join in the festivities.  Letters of congratulations and countless memories made the event even more special.  They graciously thanked the Mayor, the employees and especially their customers for their continued support and loyalty.

If you haven't stopped by for a visit...do so.  It's a place where everyone can meet new friends, feel safe and welcome...and everyone will know your name.   www.flaglerbar.com
